2019.02.15 “What the future looks like is…”

What the future looks like is electric cars, to use one of Ebell’s examples. They outperform internal combustion vehicles by every metric: They move more nimbly, they cost less to own and operate, they break down less often because there are fewer moving parts.

What the future looks like is mass transit. Visit Europe and ride on the trains for a few days and then explain how much more modern it is to sit in traffic jams in American exurbia.

What the future looks like is “upgrading all existing buildings,” because it’s now easy to do. Example after example shows that technology like, say, air-source heat pumps don’t just cut carbon, they cut heating bills, making them affordable from day one.

We’re against these things because—why again?

Bill McKibben: Climate Change Is Scary—Not the Green New Deal

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King this weekend, who would have been alarmed by climate change.

We live in a day, said the philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, “when civilization is shifting its basic outlook; a major turning point in history where the pre-suppositions on which society is structured are being analyzed, sharply challenged, and profoundly changed.” What we are seeing now is a freedom explosion, the realization of “an idea whose time has come,” to use Victor Hugo’s phrase. The deep rumbling of discontent that we hear today is the thunder of disinherited masses, rising from dungeons of oppression to the bright hills of freedom. In one majestic chorus the rising masses are singing, in the words of our freedom song, “Ain’t gonna let nobody turn us around.” All over the world like a fever, freedom is spreading in the widest liberation movement in history. The great masses of people are determined to end the exploitation of their races and lands. They are awake and moving toward their goal like a tidal wave. You can hear them rumbling in every village street, on the docks, in the houses, among the students, in the churches and at political meetings. For several centuries the direction of history flowed from the nations and societies of Western Europe out into the rest of the world in “conquests” of various sorts. That period, the era of colonialism, is at an end. East is moving West. The earth is being redistributed. Yes, we are “shifting our basic outlooks.”

You can start with small climate action steps, and encourage others gently, and over time you will find yourself in a new better space.

Evolving takes courage, but as they say, “It’s never too late to be the person you might have been.” As with all the other principles, you can begin changing your brain patterns this very day by setting small, attainable goals, achieving them, and celebrating your success. This in turn leads to a surge in dopamine, a happy brain chemical, which you can build on. You can discover a new kind of high that comes from self-actualization.

Lowering our carbon footprint and living in balance with nature may seem like going backwards in time or making things more difficult, until we realize that the source of our strength and happiness is already inside us.

As climate action heroes, we need to spread the word. Only about 25% of voters in a recent poll thought climate change was important. The way we look at it: if you haven’t got your (planet’s) health, you haven’t got anything. The thing is, lowering our carbon footprint has multiple benefits. It saves money, conserves energy, improves the health of forests and animals, and so much more. Older generations were brought up to recycle, turn down the thermostat, and consume less, but later generations lost it somewhere along the way. We have to get it back, and make it mainstream again. Why not do it?

Choosing to live your life in a climate action way is like choosing to stop smoking, or start exercising, or focusing on your mental health. It’s not only a better way to live, it’s the right thing to do, for you, and your behavior is going to reverberate throughout society and future generations.

Happy New Year! We know what we have to do. So ignore distractions, set aside fear and uncertainty, and take climate action. Do it every day, all the time. That means doing things in a way that doesn’t destroy the climate, and is good for future generations; it’s not rocket science, and it’s going to make things better all around. New year, new action! Creative visualization is an especially useful tool for creating confidence. If you can visualize yourself succeeding before attempting a task, you are far more likely to achieve your goal. Athletes visualize scoring a goal before they go out on the field, and actors visualize receiving a standing ovation before going out on stage. Even if you are just planning to out someone out on a date, visualizing a favorable response can increase your confidence tremendously.

Today, try to stop and listen. Humans need to learn to listen to nature and the words and feelings of their fellow human beings. Many of these people are already suffering from the effects of climate change. We share a future on this planet with these people. A complete lack of balance between humans and nature is changing the planet and creating impossible futures for younger generations of people. Open yourself up to the reality that we live in, and that is under attack by a lack of listening.

…communication is far more than just speaking effectively. It involves a specific type of listening, one that is active rather than passive. It means engaging with your conversation partner in an open, empathetic way that ensures your connection is a collaboration rather than a contest.

The future depends on all of us recognizing the interdependencies we have with everything around us. It’s important for every single person to have his or her house in order in order to be able to fully participate in the wider world. Once we have ourselves in order we can more clearly determine the best ways we can contribute to a more prosperous future for everyone on the planet.

“In our change work across the country, we have repeatedly seen what happens when individuals move from simply performing tasks in a given project to collectively owning the work as part of an interdependent way of life. When participants became willing to examine how their behaviors were affecting others and the whole, they experienced a deeper level of noticing, took more responsibility, were more capable of forgiveness and stepped into what needed to be done rather than stepping back because it seemed too difficult.”

Einstein said, “A human being is part of a whole, called by us ‘universe’, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest…a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”
